This bacteria eats the limestone filler used in asphalt shingles. This issue is exacerbated on the north side and in shaded portions of your roof. Because there is less sunshine, there is more moisture, which creates the ideal atmosphere for optimal development.
Once formed, this cyanobacteria colony provides a petri-dish look on your roof.
